EWU at Florida football opener canceled

CHENEY—The biggest scheduled “money” game between a FCS and FBS school in 2020 is no more. Eastern Washington football’s season opener at Florida was canceled Thursday after the Southeastern Conference announced its football teams would only be competing in a 10-game conference schedule this fall.

The game, originally planned for Sept. 5, would’ve earned the Eagles a $750,000 check for making the trek to Gainesville. FBS schools often pay FCS schools to come play a game, and the $750,000 was to be the largest in college football this fall.

A decision on whether to reschedule the game for a future date hasn’t been made, according to a release from the EWU athletic department.

The move strikes another COVID-19 blow to EWU athletics, which have already seen their spring sports and basketball conference tournaments cut short or completely axed in 2020. The Big Sky Conference has yet to make a decision on whether it will hold a football season, but several FCS conferences have already said they won’t be holding football this fall.

All other fall sports were pushed to Sept. 18, except women’s golf (Sept. 14). EWU’s other fall sport teams include women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, golf and men’s and women’s tennis.
