CHENEY – Two people were injured – one critically – in a single-car accident just south of the Fish Lake Park entrance on Cheney-Spokane Road early Sunday morning.
According to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. Mark Gregory, a Chevy Impala driven by 19-year-old Brandon Bird of Spokane was southbound on Cheney-Spokane Road at just after midnight, May 31. Bird was traveling at a high-rate of speed, approaching 100 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle, went down an embankment and rolled, coming to rest on the vehicle’s top.
Gregory said an individual at the park witnessed the accident.
“He heard a car engine revving, screeching tires, looked up and saw the vehicle airborne,” Gregory said. “He said he lost sight of it going down the embankment.”
Gregory added that by “airborne” it’s likely the witness was referring to the vehicle rolling. Both Bird and his passenger, a woman in her early 40s, had to be extracted from the vehicle.
Gregory said the woman remained in a local hospital and was still in critical condition as of press time Tuesday. Bird was treated for his injuries and released, upon which he was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of vehicular assault and driving while licenses suspended.
Gregory also said Bird might have been impaired, a determination that is pending the outcome of an investigation.
Cheney police also assisted Spokane County deputies with taking reports on the accident.
