Second Harvest distributes food at Cheney Middle, Sunset Elementary schools

CHENEY – One of the elements of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is that it has brought the special needs of local communities more into the light. Needs that while always present, aren’t readily seen under normal circumstances.

The most pressing of those is food. Many organizations and groups have taken up the responsibility to make sure people who need help are getting fed, including most area school districts, with Second Harvest teaming with Communities in Schools and the Cheney School District to hold the “Fresh & Frozen School Distributions” program.

The program takes place every Tuesday morning from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at two locations – Cheney Middle School, 740 Betz Road and Sunset Elementary School in Airway Heights, 12824 W. 12th Ave.

Second Harvest philanthropy manager Chris Sloan said on the first day of distribution, April 21, at Cheney Middle School the volunteers began handing out packages consisting of frozen packages of carrots, potatoes, pizzas and diced apples along with fresh bananas and grapes. The distribution began around 10:45 a.m. and within 35 minutes, they were out of food after serving 125 families.

The distribution at Sunset Elementary in Airway Heights began on April 22, with similar results. Both sites have continued to be busy since then, with 175 families at CMS and about 200 families at Sunset Elementary served on April 28.

“We are planning to have them each week, on Tuesdays, through the month and possibly into June,” Sloan said.
