AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Spokane County Fire District 10 commissioners swore in new Deputy Fire Chief Don Malone at their meeting last Tuesday evening, Feb. 4.
In a news release, district officials said that prior to coming on board with the district, Malone served as assistant fire chief with Airway Heights Fire Department. He began his fire career in 1999 as a volunteer with Central Kitsap Fire in Western Washington, and also spent time with the San Bernardino County Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 8.
Prior to going into full-time fire service, Malone worked for over 18 years as a senior vice president for Eastern Washington and North Idaho at American West Bank. Over the last three years, he has attained an associate degree in fire science, an associate degree in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and a bachelor’s degree in fire administration in early 2019.
Malone is currently finishing his master’s degree in public administration and emergency management. All of his degrees come from Columbia Southern University, headquartered in Orange Beach, Ala.
Malone has also served as the “go-to-person as lead instructor” for the West Plains Joint Fire Academy and a lead for the Crew Leader Academy. He has extensive experience in command on wildland fires and structure fires involving multiple agencies and is a Type III incident management team member for wildland events.
“We are glad to keep him on the West Plains where he will be able to continue to make a difference,” District 10 stated in the release.
