Medical Lake firefighter association donates funds

Final act of the last volunteers of century-old department

MEDICAL LAKE — In one of its final acts, the Medical Lake Volunteer Firefighters Association withdrew the remaining funds from the associations bank account and donated it to the community it served for 115 years.

“One of the last things the association voted on was to disperse those funds into the community,” former Medical Lake Fire Chief Jason Mayfield said.

Mayfield, the department’s last fire chief, had the responsibility of overseeing the transition of the department after voters approved its annexation into Spokane County Fire District 3 in August.

The remaining 20 members of the association decided to divvy up the account that was “just shy of $8,000” between Friends for Children, Feed Medical Lake, Re*Imagine Medical Lake and the Medical Lake High School Booster Club, Mayfield said.

They even paid off some delinquent lunch accounts at the Medical Lake School District.

“We had a history of volunteers who were always doing what they could for the community,” Mayfield said. “This was one last thing they could do.”

According to a letter that accompanied the donation, the association historically used the funds to “help firefighters and their families in times of need,” and to provide charitable and emergency funds to the community.

The organizations who received the funds were chosen “because of their positive impact on our community,” according to the letter.
