MEDICAL LAKE — The Cardinal girls dropped their fourth game 53-44 when they faced St. George’s (4-2) on the home wood Thursday, Dec. 12.

It was a close, back-and-forth game with the score in Medical Lake’s favor 30-25 going into what head coach Kyle Lundberg called the team’s “best half of the year.’’

“Our girls came out in the first half and really played well on the offensive side,” Lundberg said. “Unfortunately, in the second half we struggled to make shots.”

The Dragons came back with a vengeance in the third quarter, putting up an aggressive defense while maintaining their steady offense to outgun the Cardinals by 14 points and holding them to as many points in the second half to overcome their first-half deficit for the win.

“We got some really good looks, but shots just didn’t fall,” Lundberg said of the second half, noting the Cardinals shot 11 of 32 from the field in the first half, but only 6 of 34 in the second.

“We also got out rebounded 41-28,” he added.

Jaycee Oliver was the Cardinals leader with 15 points, going 6 for 13 in scoring attempts, making half of her 2-point attempts and 4 for 6 on 3-point shots.

Lexie Redell, benched during the Okanogan game due to a back injury, was close behind with 12 points, all but two of them off turnovers.

Ellie Haas and Emma Maxwell each brought in five points. Emily Munson scored four points and led rebounding with five offensive and four defensive rebounds.

“We’ve had a pretty tough non-league schedule,” Lundberg said, noting that three of the four teams the Cardinals have played to-date made the 2B state tournament last season.

He took that as an advantage.

“It has given us the opportunity to find things we do well and things we need to get better at moving forward,” he said.

The Cardinals dropped to 0-4 as they looked ahead to their first Northeast A League game against a young, winless but “scrappy” Lakeside team on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Lundberg isn’t taking any chances.

“They are a team that if you don’t come ready to play, they will beat you,” he said. “I believe our girls will be ready for the game and bring their very best.”
