Advisory group to recommend new pay-per-mile tax

State Transportation Commission wants new tax phased in to generate more revenue

Last updated 12/18/2019 at 9:08am

OLYMPIA — The state Transportation Commission voted Tuesday to recommend the state implement a new pay-by-mile road tax.

The commission recommendation is expected to be presented to Gov. Jay Inslee and the Legislature by Jan. 13, the first day of the 2020 legislative session.

The recommendation calls for phasing in the new tax. Meanwhile, gas taxes will continue to be collected at the pump.

The recommendation also calls for an additional $75 license tab fer on hybrid and electric vehicles annually.

The recommendation comes just 6 weeks after 52.99% of voters statewide approved Initiative 976, which caps taxes and fees at $30 annually on most non-commercialvehicles.

King County, the city of Seattle and others filed a lawsuit in King County Superior Court earlier this month to block the will of voters.

King County Judge Marshall Ferguson issued an injunction blocking the measure from going into effect until a trial court rules in the lawsuit.
