More than 700 Eastern Washington University students were treated for flu-like symptoms in advance of the normal flu season since school season started in September.
Medical Lake School District held a town hall meeting to discuss a study looking at the district’s need for maintenance, improvements and expansion of the its current facilities. The study was funded by a state grant.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office took formal control of Medical Lake’s law enforcement duties after the City Council unanimously approved the contract.

A stolen truck was linked to a crime spree in Cheney after three suspects were apprehended in the hot vehicle with ample evidence of other crimes.
Medical Lake Mayor Jim Hill was forced to break a tie vote related to a 6 percent property tax increase after hearing from four concerned citizens. Two of the six council members chose to abstain from a vote, ending in a two yea, two nay vote. The measure passed.

Cheney’s official centennial time capsule was scheduled to be closed and set on Nov. 13. It included calendars, Mount St. Helens ash, a Sears catalog, maps, a summer reading program T-shirt, and other era-relevant items.
After a year in the planning, a Medical Lake Community Outreach resource service, run mainly by area pastors and church representatives, went live to help locals in need of assistance, advocacy and referrals.
The Blackhawk cross country team brought home the state AA championship title, a first in the team’s history.

A discussion forum regarding West Plains annexation and water issues was held and included mayors from Medical Lake, Spokane, Cheney and Airway Heights at Eastern Washington University. The panel was moderated by Spokane County Commissioner Jerry Kopet.
The Medical Lake City Council heard an update regarding the probability of the city receiving a state grant to improve Waterfront Park.
The Cheney boys’ cross country team claimed the title of district champs after Ernie Odel crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 11 second, followed by six more Blackhawks in the following 31 seconds.

A survey of Fisher Junior High students found that 82 students at the school alone had a family member — fathers, one set of parents, cousins, uncles and others — directly involved in the Vietnam War.
Construction started on a new A&W drive-in restaurant remodel that would enlarge the building.
Canned chili was on sale at Safeway, four cans for $1.
