CHENEY – A pair of wins last week have kept the Blackhawks girls soccer team in reach of a Great Northern League regular-season championship and top-seed into the upcoming District 7 playoffs.

Cheney got two goals from Makenna Benson to hold off East Valley on the road Tuesday, Oct. 15. Jocelyn Cone got the Blackhawks on the board one minute into the game, with Benson scoring in the 38th minute to put Cheney up 2-0 at the half.

After East Valley trimmed Cheney’s margin to one with a goal in the 46th minute, Benson’s second score three minutes later helped ensure the team’s 3-2 win. Cheney out shot East Valley 7-6, with goalkeeper Sydney Reagan making four saves.

The Blackhawks had less of a challenge two days later at home against winless Pullman. Cone scored three goals and Benson had two and an assist in an 8-1 romp of the Greyhounds. Also getting goals for Cheney were Lauren Woller, Kaitlin Teeters and Lexi VanHorne, with Emma Scott collecting three assists and Mackenzie Huotari two.

Cheney out shot Pullman 18-3, with Sydney McCarthy making a pair of saves.

Cheney improves to 9-1 in the GNL, 11-3 overall with 27 points and is in a virtual tie with West Valley (9-1, 11-2, 27 points) for the league’s top seed. The Blackhawks face off with the Eagles at home on Thursday, Oct. 24, but need a win Tuesday, Oct. 22, on the road at third-place Clarkston (3-6, 5-6, 9 points) first.

West Valley was off until the Cheney game, and finishes their regular season on Oct. 29 against East Valley. Cheney and West Valley have split their two previous meetings, with both teams winning at home.
