In the last race of the day, the senior race, there were 176 runners. Winston Telford finished 31st in 13:58.

Davenport followed that by competing at a District 7 league meet on Sept. 17 at St. George’s High School. The Gorillas placed second out of 12 teams, trailing the host Dragons 61-85. Telford led Davenport, placing second with Bruce 13th, Duff 15th, Soliday 28th, Lenocker 29th, Jake Coffman 43rd and Tommy Plumb 44th.

Oct. 8 the Gorillas traveled to Plantes Ferry and competed in a race involving six league teams. Again, the Gorillas came in second with 59 points, this time behind a talented Asotin team. Telford was first with a time of 17:16, followed by Coffman at 18:15, Soliday in 19:01, Duff at 19:03, Lenocker at 19:04, Bruce in 19:54 and Plumb in 20:22.

“Times are coming down but still have a lot of work to do before regionals at Chewelah on Saturday, Nov. 2,” assistant coach and athletics director Tim Zeiler wrote in an email. “We have a lot of talent on the team which makes practices very exciting.”

On Oct. 15, the Davenport boys traveled to St. John for a league race on St. John’s Golf Course, winning with 22 points over four other schools. Telford won the varsity boys 5K race with a time of 17:52. Coffman was third with a time of 19:04, with Duff was sixth in 19:45, Bruce seventh in 20:17 and Soliday wrapping up the scoring with an eighth-place finish in 20:19. Lenocker was ninth in 20:26 and Plumb 11th in 20:37.

“All in all, the Gorillas showed true grit with all of their runners in the top 11.” Zeiler said. “The course seemed a little long and times are not indicative of their effort on the course.”

The boys will be traveling to Lakeside on Saturday, Oct. 19, to compete in the Lake Spokane Cross Country Invitational. Zeiler said it will be a good tune-up race for the upcoming district championships Oct. 26, and regional competition on Nov. 2.

The state championships are Saturday, Nov. 9, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
