Cardinal girls season soccer struggles continue

MEDICAL LAKE – The Medical Lake girl’s soccer squad is making headway, albeit at a glacial pace, according to head coach Zane Higgins.

“We keep plugging away and working on fundamentals, then apply them,” Higgins said of practices. “We just have some issues executing.”

The Cardinals, who have yet to notch a win, faced Deer Park at home in Northeast A league play on Tuesday, Oct 1, only to be pummeled 13-0, although 10 of those points came in the first half.

Considering the Stags are leading the NEA at 7-0, and are 9-1 overall, that the young Cardinal team held them to three goals in the second half denotes progress.

In addition to being a young, inexperienced team, the they’ve also been plagued by injuries: the team’s only club player, goalie Annastasia Hurt-Moran, has been sidelined with a knee injury.

Lucy Chicoine has taken up the goalie position and is “doing a pretty good job with that,” Higgins said.

The Cardinals were scheduled to be on the road all this week, facing Lakeside (5-2, 6-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 8, followed by second seed Freeman (6-1, 8-1) on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Medical Lake is the only team in the NEA without a win and sit at the bottom of the league at 0-6, and 0-8 overall.
