One hundred twenty-five years ago in 1894, farmers received poisons and chemicals for free from the county government to rid the fields of ground squirrels, or gophers. The rodents were a nuisance to crops, but the real hazard was to the valuable plough horses because the gopher’s holes could break a horse’s leg.
