Corrections award is becoming a family legacy

A corrections officer at Airway Heights Corrections Center is following in his father’s footsteps, becoming the second in his family to be awarded the facility’s Correctional Officer of the Year award.

Nathan Blum, who was presented with the 2019 honor this month, has been working for Airway Heights for more than a decade, according to a press release. Prior to working in corrections, he was struggling to find career stability, he said.

“Before I started this I was piece-mealing stuff together trying to figure out what I was going to do” Blum said in a statement.

Blum’s father, Robert Blum, started working at Pine Lodge Corrections Center in 1977. He worked at that facility for 15 years, during that time earning a Correctional Officer of the Year award. Robert was one of four people appointed to the startup crew of what would eventually become Airway Heights Corrections Center. Robert earned another Correctional Officer of the Year award during his eight years there prior to his retirement in 2000.

Now, his son works with his father’s former co-workers.

“The stability of this job, the family aspect of it, the comradery — Airway Heights Corrections Center has a great family,” Blum said.
