American Legion Post 196 AA breaking even at season halfway mark

The Medical Lake American Legion AA Post 196 baseball squad went into a doubleheader against Riverside on the road on Tuesday with a two-game wining streak as of press time, pounding Cheney13-3 in game one of a doubleheader, and 5-4 in game two on Thursday, June 13.

Post 196 is 4-4 in league play and 5-7 overall with about a month left to play.

Head coach Jefferson French called his boys, who are making the next step from school ball, a “come-from-behind team.”

“We’re scrappy team. You can’t count us out — we keep competing,” French said during a telephone interview Tuesday. “We’ve had to sort of crawl back from behind in every game.”

The team consists of players from Medical Lake, Davenport and Reardan.

Denton Dill, a Davenport sophomore, is one of the teams “big pitchers,” logging three wins, while junior Aiden Kieffler of Reardan has pitched some “big game for us” as well, French said.

Medical Lake’s varsity player Joe Oliver has also done plenty of damage from the mound.

Another Davenport player, Garrett Mellick, is one of the team’s more athletic, versatile players and also the teams lead batter, according to French.

“He runs bases well and makes really athletic, highlight plays in the outfield,” French said.

Offensively, Medical Lake’s Cameron Comer has been consistent at-bat, with some clutch plays in the last several games, according to French.

“He’s been hitting the ball well for us,” he said.

I think the biggest takeaway is they are competitive,” French said. “They’re a fun bunch of kids. They really embody the competitive nature of sports. It’s nice.”

Post 196 hosts Mead today at 5 p.m. at Medial Lake High School.
