McGee places sixth in triple jump; advances to NCAA Division

The Eastern Washington University track and field team’s season will continue for junior Keshun McGee, who advanced to the NCAA Championships in a second event while competing on the last day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday (May 25).

McGee placed sixth overall in the triple jump with a mark of 52-feet 4 3/4-inches to advance to the NCAA championships and become the first male or female from Eastern to advance to the DI outdoor championships in two events. The Bremerton, Wash., native had also competed in the long jump on Thursday (May 24) and earned eighth to advance.

“What a performance,” said men’s head coach Stan Kerr in a news release. “Keshun did Eagle Nation proud tonight in qualifying in his second event for the NCAA Division I National Track & Field Championships.”

McGee will be competing on Wednesday (June 5) at 6 p.m. Pacific time in the long jump and Friday (June 7) at 5:40 p.m. in the triple jump at the University of Texas in Austin. Although McGee is the first to advance to the outdoor championships in two events, Kurt Kraemer competed in the long jump and triple jump at the 2001 indoor championships.

“Coach Nielsen had Keshun ready to go and, WOW, did Keshun deliver,” Kerr said. “The team and staff are deeply proud of Keshun and what he’s done all year long. Now comes the fun part, heading to Austin to compete with the best in the country. We’re excited for him and this opportunity to represent EWU on the national stage.”

Overall, a total of seven Eagles competed at this year’s regional meet. The next Eagle that was the closet to advance was Larry Still in the pole vault where he finished 21st.
