Police seek information on Airway Heights fatal hit and run

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit investigators attempting to piece together a hit and run collision that left a pedestrian dead believe they’ve found the suspect vehicle after searching for nearly five days.

Spokesperson Cpl. Mark Gregory said investigators seized what they believe to be the vehicle involved in the crash on the evening of Tuesday, May 21, and are working to positively identify the driver.

This follows several days of work in which investigators sought contact with the drivers of specific vehicles and anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

The incident in question took place just after 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 16, when Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle/pedestrian collision on Hayford Road at Sprague Avenue in Airway Heights.

The pedestrian was trying to cross Hayford from east to west when a driver traveling south struck them with their vehicle. The driver stopped after the collision but later fled the scene, according to a press release.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the adult male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the name of the pedestrian.

“The case is moving forward,” Gregory said. “Though we’ll continue to seek the help of anyone who may have witnessed the incident.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Cpl. Jeff Welton at 509-477-3237.
