Cheney book club’s May 28 meeting includes monk

The last Cheney book discussion meeting of 2019 will be held in the meeting room of the Cheney library on Tuesday May 28 at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Tibetan Buddhist monk and Eastern Washington University’s global scholar and adviser, the venerable Thuppen Phelgye. The book to be discussed is “Open Heart” by his Holiness the Dali Lama.

A new series of book discussions will begin this fall. Titles of books to be discussion can be obtained at the checkout desk in the library.

Cheney High holds band clothing drive and concert

Cheney High School bands are performing a free jazz concert on Thursday, May 30, at 7 p.m. at Cheney Middle School. The public is invited to attend.

The band is also holding a clothing drive. If you would like to donate clean clothes by June 10, call Leslie King at 235-9980.

EWU Symphony to feature concerto winners

The Eastern Washington University Symphony Orchestra presents a concert featuring Music Department concerto winners Noel Jabagat, Jonathan Williams and William Fisher on Wednesday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Showalter Auditorium.

Music includes Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Tchiakovsky’s Violin Concerto and Aaron Copland’s “Hoe-Down,” along with the world premiere of EWU music composition major Nathan Sumerlin’s “Echoes of Night.” Special guests will be the Cheney High School String Orchestra.

General admission tickets are $5, senior and non-EWU students $3. EWU students, faculty and staff admission is free.

Spokane County libraries closed for Memorial Day

All Spokane County Library District facilities will be closed on Monday, May 27, to observe Memorial Day. Regular library hours resume Tuesday, May 28.
