After one year as Medical Lake’s code enforcement officer, Don Mayfield announced his resignation at the May 5 City Council meeting, saying he’d accepted a position with another organization.

The Cheney High School greenhouse class raised about $575 in a plant sale and planned another one before Memorial Day weekend.

Medical Lake High School students Emily Lewan and Jessica Kaufman were recently selected by members of the Medical Lake American Legion Auxiliary Erroll L. English Unit 196 to attend the annual Evergreen Girls State citizenship-training program, to be held June 14-20 in Ellensburg.

The Cheney boys’ soccer team stretched their winning streak to a season high six games with a pair of wins last week – and in the process, cemented their third straight Great Northern League regular season title and a first-round playoff bye.

May 20, 1999

What took the Cheney Planning Commission more than a year to decide, the Cheney City Council put into city law in 20 minutes, easing the parking and siting requirements on fraternities and sororities in the city’s Greek overlay zone.

Medical Lake planned on hiring a new police chief by the end of August 1999 to start work the first week of September. At least the tentative timeline calls for it to be so.

A dozen Cheney High tracksters will compete on their home turf this week, squaring off against the best the Frontier and Mid-Valley leagues have to offer.

May 18, 1989

Eastern Washington University officials are pleased with the higher education portion of the 1989-91 operating and capital biennium budget recommended by the legislative conference committee.

Several members of the Eastern Washington University faculty, staff and alumni were recently honored with significant awards, including Dr. Eugene Kiver, professor of geology, who received The Trustees’ Medal.

The Cheney Blackhawks are two wins away from earning a berth in the “Final Four” and a chance to play for the state Class AA baseball championship.

Cheney’s track and field athletes will be shooting for a berth in next week’s state meet when they travel to Clarkston for district competition.

May 17, 1979

Cheney residents will be surveyed over the next two weeks in connection with plans by the city administration to organize a new community and economic development plan, according to Mayor Tom Trulove.

Another step in the cooperation between Cheney, Medical Lake and the Spokane County Fire District No. 3 was completed with the arrival of a $6,000 air compressor at the Cheney Fire Station.

Eastern Washington University’s men’s track squad surprised no one as it captured its fifth straight NAIA District I championship with 266 points last weekend at Cheney.

May 15, 1969

Glen Best will be installed as president of the high school PTA Wednesday, May 21, at 8 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.

Steven Douglas Swegle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Swegle, was awarded the Governor Trophy in Air Force ROTC at the University of Washington, in RO Unit Review as the most outstanding group commander in the program of the academic year at the University. Governor Daniel Evans made the presentation personally, which was one of three trophies in ROTC governors awards.

Brown and Holter Chevrolet rolled into the top spots in both Monday and Tuesday night bowling leagues at Dyck’s Bowling alley.
