Despite the Washington State Legislature slashing school funding statewide, the Cheney School District plans to not let the budget cuts impact its programs and teaching levels.

The Medical Lake School Board held its annual hearing on Initiative 728, where school officials announced the district won’t be getting the initiative funds as promised by the state next year, or the year after. The district intended to spend 100 percent of I-728 money on class size reduction.

Medical Lake first-grader Reo Layton was awarded the 2009 Chase Youth Commission’s award for courage at a March 26 ceremony held at Whitworth University in Spokane.

With two games remaining, the Cheney boys’ soccer team was the Great Northern League’s top playoff spot squarely in sight – which for head coach Steve Davis was one of the best reasons why his team needed to stay focused.

Cheney’s city administrator search entered the homestretch as Mayor Amy Jo Sooy received the advisory report from the citizen group she put together to help her choose the city’s next head employee.

Beth Boots, a 17-year-old junior at Cheney High School, was named as one of four ambassadors for the 1999 edition of the Spokane Interstate Fair.

The Cheney Blackhawks planned to polish off the regular season, then immediately turn their attention to the Frontier League’s post season baseball tournament.

May 10, 1979

Cheney School District voters approved a $933,740 levy referendum for continued operation of facilities and education of students; the state passage requirement of 60 percent favorable voters was exceeded by 5.23 percent as (unofficially) 2,569 voters turned out, up from 2,128 in February when a slightly higher levy narrowly failed.

Students at Medical Lake Elementary School participated in a Bicycle Roadeo last week in connection with the local law enforcement officers.

The boys’ track team walked all over Colville in a meet, beating them with a score of 132 to 9 while the girls did almost as well, scoring 91 points to Colville’s 31.

May 8, 1969

Ruth Cheney Streeter, for whom the newest residence hall at Eastern Washington State College was to be named, was honored May 13 when the hall will be officially dedicated in ceremonies starting at 3 p.m.

The Mayor’s Trophy was awarded to the Medical Lake Float at the Apple Blossom Parade in Wenatchee despite the fact that the generator failed and the mechanical erupting volcano stopped erupting and smoking.

Eight Cheney high school girls participated in Washington’s first Girls’ State Track Meet held at Goldendale.
