Cheney girls fall to East Valley, come back against Clarkston

The Cheney girls tennis team is finding that persistence is the name of the game, according to head coach Jeff Ward. The girls faced off against East Valley on Tuesday, April 23 and lost 6-1, but learned a lot in the process, he said.

“We’re working on a culture of leadership and improving each point,” Ward said. “We have a really young team mixed with a couple of seniors.”

No. 1 singles player Grace Hammermeister defeated East Valley’s Tiffany Phout via forfeit but it wasn’t quite enough to keep the lead. East Valley doubles team Jasmine McGee and Jessica Ho defeated Cheney’s Abbey Fillmore and Cassie McDaniel 6-0, 6-0.

“The strides that were made in terms of perseverance are more important to me,” Ward said. “And the game against East Valley outweighs the last one even though the scores don’t really show it.”

A Thursday, April 25, match was much closer, with Clarkston winning 4-3. The only thing ensuring the score gap wasn’t wider was a Hammermeister defeat of Bantam Alex Grovom 6-2, 6-0.

The team went up against West Valley on April 30 and will see Pullman on the court in a home game on May 2.
