The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced its WIAA/Wendy’s Athlete of the Week winners for Week 28 (March 17-23) on Wednesday, March 27 — and a pair of West Plains/south Spokane County athletes made the list.

Cheney High School senior Camden VerStrate notched a pair of first-place performances at the Cheney Ice Breaker meet, winning the 100-meter dash in 10.82 seconds and the 200 in 22.09, setting new personal records (PR) in both events. Three days later, he repeated the performance at a five-team meet at Whitworth University, winning the 100 in 10.82 and the 200 in 22.30. He also was a member of the first-place 4x100 relay team and the second-place 4x400 team.

To the southeast of Cheney, Liberty High School (Spangle) junior Jake Carr threw four innings of one-hit ball in a 26-2 baseball win over St. John Endicott, striking out 10 Eagles batters. Carr also delivered offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a single, double, 3 RBIs and four runs scored. He reached base two other times after being hit by pitches.

Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes varsity athletes who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off of nominations). All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA/Wendy’s Athlete of the Week Award. Students may win the award once during any given academic year.
