Cheney golfers test skills in tournament

The Great Northern League hosted its first golf tournament on March 28, with the Cheney girls team playing at the Quail Ridge Golf Course and the boys playing at Clarkston Country Club.

The Cheney boys took fifth in the tournament, behind first-place Clarkston, second-place Pullman, third-place West Valley and fourth-place East Valley.

Blackhawk Franky Reeves scored 129 total strokes, just a hair higher than his teammate Donovan Hart’s 128 and Nate Elliot’s 127. Cheney’s Chris Mathews earned a score of 112.

The girls scores, calculated using the modified Stableford system, found longtime Cheney player Katarina Ljubisic sitting pretty with 53 strokes, while Shelby Draper scored 30, Halle Sarent 26, and Amelia Moore 27. Cheney’s Ashlyn Wood and Paige Hughes offered up 17 and 12 strokes, respectively.

Their performance put Cheney in the top three of girls tournament play, placing third behind Pullman and West Valley. East Valley in fourth place and Clarkston in fifth place rounded out the competition.
