Cheney School Board considers policy tweaks

Last updated 4/4/2019 at 4:36pm

The Cheney School Board was left with a lot to consider at its March 27 meeting, hearing first readings of half a dozen school policy revisions.

Kicking off the meeting, the board recognized National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) Rebecca Hansen, Rhonda Heal, Heather McLagan, and Rebecca Ward and NBCT certification renewals by Tammy Hauer, Sarita Hopkins and Alison Tobler.

The board also met Cheney High School’s unified basketball team.

The first readings were primarily to codify simple changes or additions to existing school board rules, including those governing meeting standards on state assessments and how students may earn class credit based on those assessments. There was also some wordsmithing done on policies dictating high school graduation requirements and what circumstances could allow the waiver of high school credits.

Some of those circumstances included homelessness, a health condition, a family crisis and other emergencies.

Also presented to the board was a state-mandated facilities condition report on the information and condition of local schools. This report, required by the state Superintendent’s Office of Public Instruction, is meant to promote student health and safety by maintaining and operating building systems. Through the report, school officials hope to extend building life, thus minimizing future capital needs.

The program scores each building with a “building condition assessment” (BCA) percentage out of 100. The five major categories school districts are judged on include substructure, shell, interiors, services and furnishings.

Nearly all of Cheney’s buildings scored above 70 percent, with most scoring above 80 percent. Windsor Elementary’s P-3 wing, built in 2005, earned a BCA score of 67.56 percent.

The buildings’ individual components like HVAC and electrical systems were also scored, all with a “good” score of 90 percent or an “excellent” score of 100 percent.

The board will hear second readings of the changed policies and procedures at its next meeting on April 17 at 4 p.m. at Salnave Elementary.
