Like many of their fellow spring sports athletes around the region, Cheney High School’s softball team finally made it onto the competitive field with a pair of road games last week.

The Lady Blackhawks opened with a trip to Warden on Thursday, March 21. The perennial 1A state tournament contending Cougars (3-0) of the South Central Athletic Conference pounded out 12 hits against Cheney pitching, and helped by five Lady Blackhawks errors, notched an 8-1 win, scoring at least one run in every inning except the sixth.

Cheney managed six hits, all singles except for a double by Alexis Mitchell. Mitchell took the loss in the pitching circle.

The Lady Blackhawks needed just two days before getting into the winning column for the first time this season. Cheney overcame an early 4-2 deficit with two runs in the third and five more in the fourth en route to a 12-4 win over 4A Sunnyside of the Columbia Basin Big Nine League on March 24.

Cheney banged out 16 hits, four by sophomore Isabell King and three each by Mitchell and senior Shelby Melton, including a triple and double respectively. The Lady Blackhawks committed four errors but were helped by six Sunnyside miscues.

Mitchell (1-1) got the win, giving up no earned runs while striking out eight Grizzlies batters.

Cheney continues a busy schedule this week, weather permitting, albeit one that’s somewhat altered. Instead of traveling to 1A Connell on Tuesday, the Lady Blackhawks took the bus farther south to take on 3A Kamiakin in Tri-Cities.

Cheney then travels to Ephrata for a game with the Tigers March 29, returning to the area to open Great Northern League play on Saturday, April 6 with a doubleheader at West Valley.
