Then-president of Eastern Washington University Stephan Jordan voiced concern after a Spokane Superior Court judge dismissed a rape charge involving an EWU student, claiming that the county had taken too long to appoint a public defender.

Medical Lake was advised by its risk-management representative to purchase insurance for its Founder’s Day event.

The fledgling career of 13-year-old boxer Nalo Leal was beginning to take flight under the tutelage of his trainer and mother, Dondra Pimental.

March 15, 1989

A group of Cheney ninth-graders won five straight games and captured the championship at the Chelan Invitational AAU Basketball Tournament.

More than 135 Japanese students from Asia University arrived at Eastern Washington University to study English, American history, ecology and physical education during a five-month stay.

A fire broke out at Eagles Landing in downtown Cheney. Early signs indicated it was a chimney fire caused by creosote buildup. Damage to the building was slight.

March 15, 1979

A modern, new veterinary office began operating in Cheney. The Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital on 1st Street was designed for the treatment of large and small animals with input from local veterinarians working at the clinic. .

Zip’s Restaurant in Cheney joined several other area merchants for the L’eggs Egg Drive sponsored by the Cheney Free Press. Anyone who brought in an egg would be treated to a free cheeseburger.

Eastern Washington University’s Intercollegiate Knights fraternity conducted a multiple sclerosis fundraiser in Cheney, going door-to-door seeking contributions.

50 Years Ago

March 13, 1969

The Medical Lake March of Dimes Drive celebrated a new all-time fundraising high — $695 collected during the march and following week.

Three members of the Eastern Washington State College mathematics department faculty delivered papers at the 75th annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans.

The board of directors of the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association adopted a resolution on cigarette smoking and health, citing “massive evidence that cigarette smokers die younger than non-smokers.”
