West Plains Support Network plans for the future

Last updated 3/14/2019 at 9:42pm

The recently-formed West Plains Support Network (WPSN) met last week to set 2019 goals and discuss how those goals may be accomplished.

The WPSN was created in February 2017 to address issues facing the West Plains community. Several members work within local school districts or represent businesses in Cheney, Medical Lake and Airway Heights.

It’s most recent gathering included analysis of a community needs assessment survey sent out to former WPSN meeting attendees, asking them to gauge and rank the problems facing the West Plains.

According to the survey, family violence ranked as the number one concern facing the community, closely followed by youth activities and mental health services. About 48 percent of responders said they lived in Airway Heights, while nearly 28 percent said they lived in unincorporated Spokane County or the surrounding West Plains area.

Other issues brought to the table included homelessness, housing and drug or alcohol addiction. The WPSN board will be discussing these findings and hopes to narrow down the responses to a few specific issues the organization will focus on throughout the year. That will be the primary focus of the next meeting, tentatively scheduled for April 10.

The West Plains Support Network meets the first Wednesday of every month 9:30 – 11 a.m. Location varies. For more information, contact the Cheney Free Press.
