Four Cardinal wrestlers place at state

The Medical Lake wrestling squad closed out an impressive season last weekend at the Matt Classic XXXI at the Tacoma Dome, taking 13 wrestlers to the state championship tournament.

Weston Thomas in the 120-pound weight class beat two wrestlers before falling to Royal's Dominic Martinez in a 1:33 minute takedown. In the consolation round he defeated two more wrestlers before being eliminated by Mount Baker's Jake Anderson for a fourth-place finish.

Aden Carl in the 113-weight class beat two opponents before suffering back-to-back losses. In the consolation round he suffered two more defeats to finish sixth overall.

In the 138 class, Justin Warnick lost his second round match. In the consolation rounds he placed seventh overall, and Victor Long in the 152 class earned an eighth place slot.

The team's first female wrestler to advance to the state championship in Medical Lake's history, Haile Threadgill, was eliminated in three matches.

Due to the years unusually challenging weather statewide, regional early elimination tournaments were canceled by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, forcing a double-bracketed tournament - 32 brackets verses the usual 16 - that wrestlers were forced to endure during the two-day meet.

Medical Lake did well for the season, finishing 12th in the 1A conference and 62nd overall statewide. Three NEA schools ranked in the top 10 in the 1A conference; Colville earned first place, Deer Park was third, followed by Newport at fourth.

"It was a pretty good year considering we are missing eight varsity wrestlers," head coach Matt Leenhouts said.
