Look at council to answer why Medical Lake isn't growing

What is missing? Why aren’t Medical Lake’s businesses or population growing? According to Doug Ross (Cheney Free Press 1/10/19), the blame lies in the limited water hookups for residential development (legitimate reasoning) and the fact that Spokane, Airway Heights and Cheney are short drives away. With fairly close shopping and services there, that means no enterprises can flourish here.

Furthermore, Ross reminded the readers that even with the mid-90s housing development of Fox Hollow and Fox Ridge, there wasn’t any resulting ML business growth. So what seems to be the problem? Why didn’t Medical Lake grow?

Perhaps it is the complete lack of ingenuity and ambition of the City Council to entice new businesses to join the Medical Lake community. Why such complacency? Several months ago, KREM reported on Spokane officials inviting new businesses to visit and become a part of Spokane. What a novel notion! Imagine promoting your area! What is our City Council doing to attract entrepreneurs?

I don’t mean to imply that our lovely town should grow into the next Liberty Lake. No thanks. However, if something isn’t growing, it is dying. As a matter of fact, the ONLY improvements and changes to Medical Lake in the past five years have come from the home-grown movement called Re*Imagine Medical Lake. These local volunteers and the MLSD superintendent are who are making a difference to our community — NOT our city leaders.

Congratulations to Mr. Ross and the ML City Council for being fiscally responsible and staying within tight monetary constraints. That feat does deserve some bragging rights.

However, the smugness should stop there. Amazon, etc. are coming to our area, and all of the growth doesn’t need to go to our neighbors — Medical Lake deserves more.
