'Frontera' print exhibit at EWU Gallery of Art

Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art is pleased to present “Frontera,” an exhibition of prints by 27 artists running Jan. 24 through Feb. 28. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, Jan. 23 at noon in the EWU Gallery of Art.

According to a Jan. 6 EWU Art Department news release, “Frontera” is a printmaking portfolio exchange organized by artist Fawn Atencio. The artists participating in Frontera were asked to make prints in response to the theme of “frontier.”

In an Aug. 1, 2018 artist statement, Atencio wrote that “A frontier represents uncharted territory; interpretations of the theme include, but are not limited to, a remote piece of land or a new field of study. Artists were asked to consider how they interpret homeland, line, boundary, border, limit, confine or closure. In the present time of tensions between self and other, ‘our’ land and ‘your’ land, the exhibiting artists consider how we use lands and space of any kind to embrace or separate, contribute to a collaborative cause, or work quietly alone.”

“Frontera” is the sixth portfolio exchange Atencio has organized. According to LinkedIn, she has been an artist, educator and curator at Songlines Press Home Studio in Denver, Colo. since January 2011.

Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art is located in the Art Building situated in the center of the Fine and Performing Arts complex on the Cheney campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The gallery is closed weekends and holidays.

Admission is free.
