Annual AARP free tax assistance program begins Jan. 28 at West Plains locations

The annual AARP Free Tax-aide assistance program will begin Jan. 28 at three locations on the West Plains.

AARP Tax-aide, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. The program’s mission is to provide free basic tax return preparation for low-to-moderate income and elderly taxpayers. This includes taxpayers with disabilities, limited English proficiency and the military.

To participate in the program, the following information is required at the time of the appointment: 2017 tax return (if available), valid picture identification, Social Security card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for each taxpayer, family member and working adult. Also required are all income statements such as W-2, 1098, 1099 forms and any forms 1095 – proof of health insurance

In Cheney, assistance is by appointment only at the community library, 610 First St., Friday’s from 1– 4 p.m. and select Saturdays 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment beginning Jan. 15 call the Washington Trust Bank Tax-aide appointment line at (509) 353-4851.

In Medical Lake, assistance is first come/first served at City Hall, 124 S. Lefevre St. Wednesdays and Thursdays 5 – 7 p.m. At Fairchild Air Force Base, assistance is first come/first served at the Base Education and Training Center, 6 West Castle St., Room 204 on Mondays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
