Candy Cane XI opens EWU indoor season
The Eastern Washington University track and field teams begin their 2018-19 indoor season this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 30, Dec. 1) hosting the Candy Cane Xl at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse.
“The Candy Cane Track and Field meet is an opportunity for the athletes to see where they stack up after fall training,” head women’s coach Marcia Mecklenburg said.
The Candy Cane will be a two-day dual meet against the University of Montana, but also includes men’s heptathlon and women’s pentathlon competitors from other schools.
The men’s heptathlon starts competition at noon on Friday, followed by the women’s pentathlon at 12:30 p.m. The second day of the men’s heptathlon starts at 9 a.m., with individual field events at 10 a.m., men’s pole vault noonand individual running events at 12:30 p.m.
“From past experiences, we know the athletes from EWU and the University of Montana are excited to be a part of this special competition to kick off the 2019 indoor season,” men’s head coach Stan Kerr said.
At last year’s meet, the EWU men defeated Montana 62-41.The Eagle women defeated UM 54-52. The Eagles also claimed11 individual titles from the event.
At the Candy Cane X last year, senior Parker Bowden broke the 55-meter hurdles record which was previously held by EWU’s Steven Warner from 2013.
Junior Keshun McGee broke Candy Cane Records in the long jump and triple jump. Those records were previously set by Dominque Bobo from Montana in 2015 (long jump) and by EWU’s Cameron Moore in 2008 (triple jump).
Admission to the 11th annual Candy Cane Invitational is complimentary and open to the public.

Eagle woman drop contest to Utah
The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team hosted Pac-12 foe Utah on Nov. 21, dropping a 95-51 decision to the Utes.
Violet Kapri Morrow scored in double figures for the fourth-straight contest with 15 points. She now has 863 career points, needing just 137 more to become the 18th member of Eastern’s 1,000-point club.
Freshman Jessica McDowell-White was the other Eagle to score in double figures with 10 points, marking her second-straight double digit game.
With the loss, Eastern drops to 1-3 in nonconference play.
The Eagles hit the road Nov. 28, at Cal Poly and are home Sunday, Dec. 2 to face Fresno State at 1:05 p.m. at Reese Court.
