Lady Blackhawks crumble to Clarkston, win over West Valley

The Lady Blackhawks volleyball team had an inconsistent week, losing 3-2 to Clarkston on Oct. 2 after a vicious battle but easily overcoming West Valley on Oct. 4.

The team battled into the fifth set in an away Great Northern League match against Clarkston (5-4, 4-3,) but the Bantams’ momentum and home court advantage got the best of Cheney (6-5, 3-5,) head coach Heather Zorrozua said.

“Clarkston was a rough match for us,” Zorrozua said. “They’re a great team and they have one player who will get you.”

Zorrozua was referring to Clarkston powerhouse Eva Millan, who delivered 21 kills, 16 digs and three blocks in the Oct. 2 match. Cheney junior Shelby Draper had 19 kills, while sophomore Avery Stark came through with 14 digs and junior Riley Potter knocked it out with 42 assists.

“We’ve had a tendency to sit back and wait to see what kind of game it will be instead of walking in having made the decision to win,” Zorrozua said. “But at West Valley we came back and made it happen.”

The Lady Blackhawks had an easy victory against West Valley (0-9, 0-7,) winning in the third set 25-20. The first two sets were 25-8 and 25-12, respectively, with the Lady Blackhawks sweeping the Eagles and leading in kills and assists. Junior Madison Duilio worked for six digs, while junior Abby Witt earned the team all three of its blocks.

“When we come out and play our game, we’re really successful. It was great to see,” Zorrozua said.

The team will take on East Valley on Thursday, attempting to redeem itself after a rough loss the last time the rivals met on the court two weeks ago. The players are excited to have another go at the Knights in a league game at home, Zorrozua said.

They’ll be taking on Pullman on Saturday, and will have to make the trek to the away game. Fortunately, that particular long-haul drive and subsequent match is in the middle of the day on a weekend instead of late at night on a weekday, Zorrozua said.

“This week I just really want them to focus on them,” she said.
