Cheney dominates Mt. Spokane on the pitch

September 27, 2018

The Lady Blackhawk’s varsity soccer team outmatched Mt. Spokane in a non-league game Sept. 22, emerging victorious 3-0.

“We really outplayed them the whole game, which was interesting because we thought it would be a tough one for us,” head coach Nels Radtke said.

The team has been working on their shooting and saw that borne out in Saturday’s game with five shots on goal. One of those shots landed in the first seven minutes, scored by junior midfielder Emma Scott with an assist by junior midfielder and forward Kaitlin Teeter.

Cheney (4-3, 3-1) had five saves thanks to powerhouse keeper and senior Melissa Aris, compared to Mt. Spokane’s (3-4, 1-1) two.

Sophomore midfielder Makenna Benson came through with the team’s second goal, unassisted on a rebound in the 34th minute, while the third goal was scored in the 56th minute into a wide open net by junior forward Jocelyn Cone.

While the players were excited about their win, Radtke said they’re keeping their focus on creating a streak.

“We need to get two good quality games in a row. We had a great game against East Valley but then were flat against Ferris, so we need to continue that momentum,” Radtke said.

The team faces off with East Valley once more Sept. 25, in a match that’s bound to heat up as Cheney occupies the number one spot in the league with East Valley coming in a close second.

By all accounts, the girls have their eyes on the prize.

“One good game isn’t good enough,” Radtke said.
