Meeting for Cheney’s boys youth basketball program

Cheney is developing a basketball program for boys attending any elementary school in the Cheney School District. A meeting is planned for Monday Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Cheney High School library or Tuesday Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Windsor Elementary community room to meet parents, form teams and answer questions.

The program is for boys in third – sixth grade. Teams will be competitive with YMCA and AAU basketball. If you have any questions, call James at (509) 991-1114 or email at jameswhiteley6@gmail.com.

Local church features blues

Open mic for your musical talents followed by blues from a professional band, “Left Over Soul,” are on the schedule for “Family Fest” this Saturday at Cheney Congregational Church, 423 N. Sixth St. The free event will also have activities for kids, and hot dogs.

The open mic starts at noon and “Left Over Soul” plays from 1–3 p.m. in the north parking lot.

6th District candidates forum

Eastern Washington University’s College of Social Sciences and the School for Social Work are sponsoring a “Meet the Candidates” forum on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from noon – 1 p.m. in the Hargreaves Hall Reading Room.

The forum will feature candidates for office in the 6th Legislative District: Jeff Holy, Jessa Lewis, Dave Wilson, Jenny Graham, Mike Volz and Kay Murano.

West Plains Arts academy ‘The Scream’ art classes

West Plains Arts Academy is holding an art class based on Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” Come listen to the story behind his painting and then create your own version of his work using oil pastels — just in time to hang up for Halloween.

Three class times are available: ages 3-6, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m.; ages 7-plus Sept. 29 at 9:30 a.m. at Cheney’s Wren Pierson Community Center and Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mason Jar. Email wpartsacademy@gmail.com for more information.
