Recently there was an alt-right gun rally in Spokane. The gun activists wallpapered themselves with assault weapons and strutted about for needed attention. The candidate for 6th District state representative, Jenny Graham, was there supporting them. It made me think of my father’s values.

My father was a World War II veteran and served as an artillery gunner. While being transported across the North Atlantic, he never forgot the moment a German U-boat torpedoed the ship immediately behind his. It sank with all lives lost. It was the hospital ship with all their medical staff and supplies.

Knowing my father, if he were alive today and seeing the alt-right gun activists strutting with assault weapons, he would have thought those were the type of people with the mentality to sink a hospital ship and that he fought against in WWII. He would have seen them as radicals filled with hatred trying to ram their beliefs on others and leading our country away from freedom, and deeper into hatred and gun violence. How can anyone know if those radical weaponized gun right activists are 100 percent safe and sane? You can’t!

It is no longer an issue of being a Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, but how to bring back unity to our country which is deeply divided by hatred, violence and fear.

My father was the glue that held our family together. He had integrity, common sense, hard working ethics, a sense of humor and above all a love for his country. His parents were green card immigrants who also sought freedom in America.

Jenny Graham supports (my opinion) radical, alt-right gun activists. Why?

My vote is for Lisa Brown for Washington’s 5th Congressional District and Dave Wilson, for 6th District state representative. I feel they’ll be the glue to bring our country together.

By the way, my father’s name was Elmer.
