Last evening (Sept. 10, the Cheney School District teachers staged an informational picketing of the district administrative offices supporting their negotiations team during an arbitration meeting with the administrative team. Teachers are requesting a substantial raise from the McCleary funds allocated to this district. They need and deserve it as they have not received an actual salary raise in 10 years. Last year the number of days they were required to work was increase so their yearly contract was increased, however this was simply more pay for more work.

The McCleary ruling by the State Supreme Court fined the state of Washington because the Legislature was not following the state constitution that mandates it is the duty of the state to fund the public schools. An excellent teacher candidate with a master’s degree and no experience would make $46,209 in Cheney while Mead pays $65,762.

Several other school districts in this area also have a starting salary above Cheney. Where would this candidate go when receiving an offer from Cheney or one of the other districts?

Cheney schools have always been excellent because of the great teaching staff. Please call your school board members and ask them to use the McCleary funds to make Cheney competitive!
