The Lady Blackhawks won their first game of the season by a close margin last Friday against Northwest Christian School, eking out the win 16-14 in the fifth and final set.

"It was a close game. We learned a lot about the things we need to focus on," head volleyball coach Heather Zorrozua said.

The girls had to adjust to a different schedule when their game was moved to much earlier in the day to precede a football game. It was a back-and-forth battle for the win, with the girls' varsity volleyball team sneaking in their 2-point lead near the end of the match.

The team practiced their blocking strategies over the holiday weekend and focused on running serve-receive transition drills.

"We have a pretty big front row in terms of height, so we need to make sure our serve-receive is strong," Zorrozua said.

Several players on the young team push six feet, so making the most of their height for blocking will be an important step going forward.

The girls' next match is at home on Thursday, Sept. 6, leaving them little time to tighten up their defense, but Zorrozua is confident that the work the girls are doing in practice will build their skills throughout the season.
