New Cards' grid coach is raring to go

Medical Lake alum has plan he hopes to turn program around

There's excitement in Jeremy Bahr's voice as the Medical Lake alum gets ready for his dream job head coaching debut at his alma mater Friday night at Holliday Field.

That's where his Cardinals take on St. Maries in a nonleague matchup in what he hopes is the beginning of a turnaround for a team that has not celebrated a victory in two seasons.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. when the 1-0 Lumberjacks, 47-14 winners over Kellogg visit to resume a series that the schools played for six seasons from 2010-2015. The teams split those meetings.

"We're ready to fly. Ready or not here we come," Bahr said.

St. Maries comes off a 5-5 season in 2017 and is two years removed from a perfect 12-0 record in 2016 where they won an Idaho state title.

Bahr has seen video on quarterback Kaden Hammond, a lefty who threw for 191 yards with three touchdowns in the Lumberjacks' 47-14 season opening win last weekend.

"He's very elusive rolling out of the pocket," Bahr said.

Other scouting reveals they have some basketball kids in the wideout sports. "We'll be tested," Bahr said.

Bahr was hired this past February following the November resignation of Mo Owen who struggled through the two winless seasons. He's had an aggressive offseason schedule of camps and other activities which has resulted in a solid turnout that will afford the program the opportunity to field both varsity and junior varsity teams.

Both squads participated Friday at Ritzville in the jamboree that involved Colfax, Davenport, Northwest Christian, Chewelah and host Lind-Ritzville-Sprague.

It was good, as always, to break out of the monotony of hitting your own guys in practice, Bahr said. And he especially liked what he saw in the gift that dropped into his lap with the transfer of Aiden Lyrla from Northwest Christian who earned his spot as starting quarterback.

"He's a pretty dang good passer in the pocket," Bahr said. "He did some good things reading and managing the secondary coverage. He earned his stripes."
