Cheney Fire Department responded to three fires all within a week of each other, though none caused serious damage. The combination of high temperatures, dry conditions and wind made for the blazes.

The city of Medical Lake sent out 1,393 surveys asking if citizens wanted to see fireworks banned within the city's corporate boundaries. The results indicated of the 427 returned (31 percent), 19 percent said they don't favor a ban, while the remaining 11 percent said yes to it.

Airway Heights City Council unanimously approved a fee waiver for a new home being constructed by the Hayden Homes development company's Giving Fund that was slated for a late summer completion and dedication.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that Cheney's wastewater treatment plan garnered top regional honors from the agency for excellence in operations and maintenance.

Cheney School District parents finally found out whether their kids would participate in a D.A.R.E. program next year. They were told that if they can come up with about $1,500 by Dec. 31 to contribute to the program, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office would take over the group for the rest of the grade schools in the district for the 1998-1999 school year.

West Plains Goju-Ryu Karate filled a downtown Cheney space with lethal karate kicks and the intense workouts of kickboxing aerobics.

July 21, 1988

Petitions popping up around Cheney protesting new fees for the city swimming pool had done little good, as city leaders determined that the new fees were not out of line.

A year-long study and countywide search to determine the best location for Spokane's new regional ash landfill had been pared down to three possibilities and two of those were in the Cheney vicinity.

Damages were kept to a minimum as a fire smoldered for a while before bursting into flames against the back wall of Eastern Washington University's Red Barn.

July 20, 1978

Three juveniles were arrested following a report of eggs being thrown at a car belonging to Russ Brown, vice principal at Medical Lake High School.

Serious crimes in Cheney over the first six months of 1978 were down 34 percent from the same time period the previous year, according to a report issued by the Cheney Police Department.

Three inmates at Pine Lodge Correction Center in Medical Lake were found guilty of assaulting and nearly killing another man.

July 18, 1968

Members of the Spokane Outboard Racers Association announced that the first hydroplane races of the year in this area would be held at Silver Lake.

A spokesman for the Cheney Rodeo association reported that last week's events were a success, with an estimated 2,700 people attending on Saturday and Sunday.

Sutton Park would be doing more than buzzing with activity as the Spokane Co. Park and Recreation Department sponsored the annual pet fair for children. Prizes were awarded n various categories and any pet was eligible for the show.
