Medical Lake collects three baseball wins

American Legion AA team preps for play in the Wood Bat in North Central Pod

Medical Lake’s American Legion Post 196 baseball team heads into the Wood Bat tournament on a roll with three consecutive wins through June 29.

Those victories include a June 28, 8-7 league win over Rogers, plus a pair of victories over the independent Cheney Summerhawks, 17-10 and 16-5 June 29.

Medical Lake had 14 hits against Rogers, rallying to score three runs in the sixth and another in the top of the seventh to hold on for the win. Joe Griffey, Pete Richardson and Trevor Hurt-Moran all managed multiple hits for Medical Lake. Griffey led his team with five hits in five at bats.

Nick Thompson and Eugene Haas split the pitching duties with Hass earning the win in his final four innings of work, allowing a pair of runs.

In the opener against Cheney, Medical Lake got 12 hits. Thompson, Sam Gollehon, Griffey and Hurt-Moran all managed multiple hits. Van Vega went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Cheney.

Medical Lake used a fast start scoring five runs in both the first and second innings, leading 10-3 in a five-inning mercy-rule shortened contest.

The second game saw Brent Keith, Josh Keifer, Griffey, Hurt-Moran, Seth Mayer, Gollehon, Thompson and Mason Hammond each collected multiple hits for Medical Lake. Keith led his team with three hits in four at bats.

Medical Lake pulled away with a three-run sixth and tacked on four more in the seventh. Mayer earned the victory with four innings of work.

The team had a July 3 league contest at Chewelah and then begins play in the Wood Bat. See the schedule on page 2 in Sports Week.
