Cheney’s Charles Johnson named athlete of the week by WIAA

Cheney High School senior Charles Johnson has been named one of 12 athletes of the week for May 13-19 by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

According to a May 23 news release from the WIAA, Johnson received the award for winning four events at the May 18 regional meet in Ephrata. His events included the 100-meter dash (10.68 seconds) and the 200 (21.55). Johnson also anchored both the first-place 4x100 relay (42.87) and the 4x400m relay (3:27.16).

Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes varsity athletes who exhibit an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off of nominations). All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA athlete of the week award.

Students may win the WIAA athlete of the week award once during any given academic year

Eastern basketball still has perfect APR

Eastern Washington University women’s basketball and women’s tennis teams posted perfect multi-year scores of 1,000 in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures released by the NCAA on May 23. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.

This is the fifth-straight year the women’s basketball team under the direction of Wendy Schuller has achieved a multi-year score of 1,000. Those two sports were joined by men’s and women’s cross country, soccer and volleyball with an APR of 1,000 in the 2016-17 season alone.
