Medical Lake Legion teams start slow

Medical Lake’s American Legion teams got off to a slow start last week.

The Medical Lake Legion Post 196’s AA team lost its opening night doubleheader on May 25 at Holliday Field to Trail, B.C. 14-1 and 8-3.

Gavin O’Brien had a triple and batted in the lone ML run in the opener. “Lots of errors on our part,” head coach Austin Sharp wrote in an email. But the fixes are there as players learn each other and new positions, he added.

Seth Mayer had a hit and RBI while O’Brien clubbed another triple, driving home a run.

“We played better defense but the walks killed us,” Sharp said. The game was shortened to five innings by a light outage at 8:30 p.m.

In A-Division play Medical Lake took part in the Memorial Day Super Bash, losing 8-0 to the Spokane Jackhammers. Eugene Haas pitched first three innings, giving up just a pair of runs. Spokane scored six times in the sixth inning to shorten the contest due to the tournament’s eight-run rule. Joe Griffey pitched 5 1/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Cheney Predators.
