Brock advances to district golf

Medical Lake’s Sierra Brock shot a 103 on Monday, May 7, and finished 16th out of 50 players to advance to 1A golf district play next week in Chewelah.

There were a couple things that helped Brock get to the next level, her coach, Jerry Ornelas wrote in an email. “One thing was to focus on her own game,” he said. “She did not become concerned with what others were doing.”

Another element was Brock relied on her irons more than usual. “Her fairway woods were not working for her that day,” Ornelas said. “So after using her driver, Sierra would use her irons to get a more accurate shot.”

While she gave up distance with irons, that was compensated for with accuracy. “She was able to stay out of trouble,” Ornelas explained.

Brock has also seen improvement in putting. “She was a three-plus putt player and now a lot of the times she is two-putting.

Other Medical Lake competitors and their scores included: Riley Olmstead (130), Halle Barsness-Ames (132), Marissa Ornelas (143) and Alex Hamby (158).
