Cheney boys fifth at Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland

Cheney High School’s boys track and field team’s trip to Portland, Ore. last Friday, April 27, for the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays was a productive one for the Blackhawks.

The Cheney dozen who made the trip combined for 43 points and a fifth-place finish overall, one point back of fourth-place Sandy High School from Sandy, Ore. and six points behind meet champion Oregon 6A classification Central Catholic of Portland.

Senior Charles Johnson, junior Jacob McGourin and freshman Cole Omlin landed the highest places for the Blackhawks. Johnson was second in the Elite runner’s 100-meter dash in a time of 10.71 seconds, 10/100ths of a second behind Benson’s Micah Williams.

McGourin had a throw of 163 feet, 11 inches to finish second in the discus, with Issaquah senior Joey Jensen first at 170-07. Omlin went 6-04 for second in the high jump, tying senior Aidan Acord from Sheldon High School in Sheldon, Ore., but missing the top through number of misses.

Other individual event finishes for Cheney were Peyton Putney, 15th in the 100-meter varsity division; Ryan Riekmann, 18th in the javelin; Bas Holland, 23rd in the 3,000 meters; Danny Boyd, 32nd in the 110 hurdles and Andrew Rushing, 34th in the discus.

Cheney had a second, two thirds and a fourth in the relays. The 4x100 team of Zach Jongeward, McGourin, Putney and Johnson was second in 42.77, 63/100ths back of Central Catholic — giving Cheney the second-fastest time in Washington among all classifications.

The 4x200 team of Jongeward, Carson Brown, Johnson and Putney was third, as was the distance medley team of Julian Torres, Isaiah Dunn, Kevin Houndonougbo and Holland. The 4x400 team of Houndonougbo, Brown, Dunn and Johnson was fourth in 3:24.92 — 1.25 seconds off their previously best in state mark of 3:23.67.

That time was replaced by a team from Washington 4A classification Chiawana High School in Kennewick at Saturday’s Strandberg Invitational at Central Valley, who posted a mark of 3:23.31.

Cheney boys who didn’t travel to Portland instead made the trip to CV, finishing 21st in a field of 24 schools. The Blackhawks points came from junior Ryan Reimer-Golden, who finished second in the javelin with a throw of 140-06.

Like their female teammates, the Blackhawk boys will spend the next week preparing for the District 7 championships, taking place Friday, May 11, at Cheney High School.
