State DOC announces agency awards in Spokane County

Four state corrections employees working in Spokane County have received Annual Agency Awards from the Washington State Department of Corrections. They were honored at a ceremony Friday, April 20, in Tumwater.

In an April 20 news release, the DOC said that the awards recognize employees’

commitment to the department’s mission of improving public safety. Each year, staff members are nominated for the awards by their colleagues.

A total of 74 DOC employees across the state received agency awards out of a pool of 1,073 nominations.

Two award recipients work at the Airway Heights Corrections Center. Corrections and custody officer Bridgette Bolinger was named Correctional Officer of the Year, with AHCC psychology associate Susan Crowe named Employee of the Year.

The other award recipients work at the Spokane Community Justice Center. The are Anita Joens, Community Corrections Officer of the Year and community corrections officer Christina Vilar, Employee of the Year.

The Correctional Officer/Community Corrections Officer of the Year awards are presented to an officer whose performance goes above and beyond normal requirements and who demonstrates their commitment to the department’s goals and mission. This officer maintains a positive attitude, provides sound decision making and a strong commitment to teamwork.

The Employee of the Year award is presented to a person who consistently exhibits superior job performance and displays a strong work ethic. This employee strives for continuous improvement, promotes alternatives to traditional thinking, and demonstrates creativity and innovation in accomplishing their duties.

Airway Heights Corrections Center is located about 10 miles west of Spokane and houses 2,258 minimum, medium and close-level security male inmates. Community Justice Centers provide comprehensive services and monitors inmates reentering the community.
