It is finally warm again to go enjoy the outdoors

For some reason, this winter seemed to be extra long to me. I would dread going outside because I just hate being cold.

Every time winter rolls around, I always question myself why I live here. The cold just makes me cranky. The only time that I appreciate the snow is Christmas, so by Dec. 26, I want it to be gone. That never happens though.

So this past two weeks, nothing has made me happier than walking outside and feeling the warm sunshine. I guess that is the only positive thing about the dreaded cold months, it makes you extra appreciative of the sun. But this also means that it is finally time to enjoy the outdoor activities that are offered around this region.

My favorite summer activity is going kayaking and just relaxing on the lake water. Last year, I didn’t go as often as I had wished so I am making it a point this year to go even more. We are so lucky to have such a plethora of options of lakes we can choose from around here, which makes the adventures even better.

Another thing I love to do is to take my dog, a golden lab named Daisy, to the lake and just watch how happy she gets over being in the water. She knows the area so well that once we would turn onto a certain road, she would literally jump out the car window in hopes of getting to the lake sooner. I don’t think she is any happier than when she is at the lake.

But if water isn’t your thing, you still can’t beat the trails that we have either. Just in Cheney alone, there is the Fishtrap Lake trail, which is a beautiful walk and you are right next to nature. If you want to be even closer to wildlife, drive a little further, but not by much, to the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. And that is just in Cheney.

In Spokane, my favorite trail is at the Palisades Park. The first time I went there, I just thought there was only one trail which provided a magnificent view of downtown Spokane. But I later learned that I was dead wrong and there are a lot of different hikes that the park offers.

Last summer, I went on an adventure to find the waterfall because it was like a hidden gem. It was kind off the path, but I eventually found the waterfall and it was worth the trip. And I am sure that was just the tip of the iceberg in regards to what I can do there.

The events that are held in Spokane are also a lot of fun during this time of year. In less than two weeks, I will be walking Bloomsday with literally 10s of thousands of other people. Then before you know it, basketball takes over downtown Spokane and Hoopfest begins.

This region offers so many opportunities and activities during this time of the year. The reality is, if you get bored during the summer, it is your own fault.
