Medical Lake rallies for dramatic softball victory

Because of the wet, wet, wet spring weather last week, Medical Lake played just one softball game.

But it is one that those involved will remember for a while as the Cardinals scored a come-from-behind 7-6 Northeast A League victory at Freeman on April 10.

The Cardinals dug themselves out of a 6-0 deficit, scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning and then trimmed it to 6-3 with a run in the sixth which set up the dramatic finish.

With no outs, a base hit followed by a walk set the table for Suzanne Shores to crack a bases-clearing home run that caromed off the top of the fence and tied the contest.

And with one out, the next batter, Taylor Carpenter, hit a shot to right center field that cleared the fence to give Medical Lake the lead, 7-6. Carpenter led Medical Lake with three hits in four at bats. Shores was 2-for-4 while Haley Musser and Chole Hanson each had a pair of hits.

Medical Lake’s (2-3 NEA, 3-5 overall) slow start was the by-product of suspect defense.

“Our defense let us down for the first three innings,” head coach Tim Blakely said. “They committed five errors in the first three innings.” Freeman (1-3, 2-3) used that to their advantage, scoring runs off the majority of the miscues.

Carpenter also weathered the error-storm to pitch a complete game. She allowed six hits while striking out 11.

Medical Lake will try to battle both the weather and opponents this week. A Monday game with Riverside was postponed but they three league games, Chewelah April 17, followed by the rescheduled Riverside game on April 18 and Colville today, April 19 at 4:30 p.m. are on tap.
