Cheney girls tennis falls in two Great Northern League matches

In between the rain showers, the Cheney High School girls tennis team was able to compete in three matches this past week. The Blackhawks went 0-3 after visiting Deer Park and Clarkston and hosting Pullman.

The first match was on April 9 at Deer Park, where Cheney lost 3-2. Two doubles teams collected wins for the Blackhawks. The No. 1 team of Jazi Daily and Divinity Lomazzi won 6-3 in both sets. The No. 3 dou of including Brayden York-Akiu and Alysin Simons claimed a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

In singles, No. 1 Nika Kauwe lost 7-6, 6-1 while No. 2 Sarianne Winters fell 6-3, 6-2. The other doubles team at No. 2, Abby Fillmore and Cassie McDaniel lost 6-3, 6-4.

On April 10, the undefeated Pullman Greyhounds visited Cheney and won 6-1. York-Akiu collected the one win for the day in the No. 4 spot by defeating Val D’Acosta 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

The Blackhawks then traveled to face Clarkston on Monday, April 16 and fell 6-1. The lone win on the day came from the No. 3 doubles team of Simons and York-Akiu, collecting a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Bantams.

If weather cooperates, the Blackhawks were set to play on Wednesday, April 18 against East Valley seeking their first league win. They will continue competition on Friday, April 20 at West Valley and also at a tournament in Post Falls on April 21.

Note: Due to weather cancellations, the boys tennis team were not able to compete in any of their scheduled matches last week.
