Cheney High's Suominen named Spokane Scholar winner

Cheney High School senior Rachel Suominen was one of 24 area students to receive awards at the 26th annual Spokane Scholars Foundation banquet Monday, April 16, at the Spokane Convention Center.

According to an April 17 news release, a total of $60,000 was awarded to the 24 of 148 Spokane Scholars, with four students in each of the six content areas of English, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and World Languages receiving awards.

Suominen is the recipient of a $1,000 award in the English category. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Honor who earned a perfect score of 5 in the AP English Language and Composition exam.

Suominen also achieved perfect scores in the AP U.S. History and World History exams. She is very active in the Future Business Leaders of America program, having won numerous local, state and national awards and her goal is to complete a law degree with a focus in either civil rights or international law.

The Spokane Scholars Foundation is dedicated to recognizing the exceptional academic achievement of high school seniors from the Spokane area. Students complete an application following selection in one of the six content areas by their high school principal, counselor or teachers. Three judges for each category review the blind applications to determine the four award recipients in each content area.

All 148 scholars are awarded a Spokane Scholars Foundation Medal of Academic Achievement and certificate along with a congratulatory letter from U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers of Washington's 5th Congressional District of Washington. Fifteen institutions of higher education in the region will match the monetary awards of $1,000 to $4,000.
