Lady Blackhawks sweep Clarkston for first Great Northern League wins

The Cheney High softball team not only kept their overall record perfect with a sweep of visiting Clarkston Monday, April 9, but subsequently moved into first place in the Great Northern League standings.

The Lady Blackhawks pounded Bantams pitching for 27 runs and 40 hits in the doubleheader - postponed from Saturday due to weather. Cheney won game one 11-0 in five innings, with pitchers Shyla Courchaine and Maria Guglielmo combining on a one-hitter.

Game two was equally dominating as Cheney scored in every inning but the second, winning 16-6 in six innings. Pitcher Maddie Kallsen got the win.

Logan Krantz and Guglielmo each had five hits on the afternoon, with Krantz collecting a double in game two and home run in game one. Courtney Hanson had four hits, with Courchaine, Kallsen, Megan Krantz and Kyla Olson each with three hits.

The sweep puts Cheney atop the GNL standings at 2-0, 8-0 overall, with East Valley at 2-0, 3-4 and West Valley at 7-1 but yet to play a league game. The defending regular-season champion Eagles were scheduled to face East Valley on Tuesday, and travel to Pullman (0-2, 0-9) Saturday.

Cheney's Tuesday game with the Greyhounds was moved to Thursday due to the weather. The Lady Blackhawks will jump out of league action for a pair of games, one at Northeast A League Deer Park (3-1, 6-3) Friday, and a home date with Idaho Inland Empire 4A Sandpoint (2-0, 4-6) on Saturday.

Cheney returns to GNL action Tuesday, April 17, hosting West Valley in the Eagles only appearance in Cheney during the regular season.
